19″ Rackmount Solution: In Progress

About a month ago I purchased a Compaq 19″ 42RU Rack Chassis for $250 from a place on the north side. My aim is to slowly intergrate the whole house with Cat5e, RG6 Tri-shield and 4 core grey cable and run them all back to a central point, the Compaq rack. I have currently rerouted the optus cable to the rack with the addition of 10 Cat5e cables thus far. Although it isn’t alot yet, the racks current location is only temporary as we currently have plans to renovate the garage into a new set of rooms. This will envolve the recladding of walls and lining the cerling with Gyprock. When this is complete the rack will then be moved into it’s final restinf posistion with all the pre-ran cables finally being joined to the rack. At present the rack is home to: Bigmac “File Server”, Linksys Wireless Router, Motorola Surfboard Modem, 2 x 24 At&t Patch pannels and on loan from Tate a Cisco Wireless AP. Awaiting entry to rack is: a Benq 17″ LCD, Foxtel IQ, VHF Modulator, Video Patch Pannels, Additional minor file server “Virtual Server” Made from spare parts, Web server for University access “Virtual Server”, Dlink Print Server and Finally a 24 port Gigabit Switch possible Linksys or Cisco. Terabyte File Server: Completed

Recently I have just completed the building of my current file server “Bigmac”. Yes, I know I’m naming it with a fast food items name. But hey it’s easy to name all the computers on the network when you’ve got such an easy theme to go by. Anyway, The specs of Bigmac are: AMD Dual Core 3800+, 512Mb DDR 2, Gigabyte GA-M55PLUS Motherboard, 3Ware 8500 - 8 RAID Card, Antech 4RU Rackmount Case, 5 x Removable Hotswap Caddy Cages, 5 x 500 Gig WD SATA HDD’s (RAID 5), 1 x 80 Gig WD SATA HDD (System). The PC is currently running Ubuntu Linux Feisty in console, using Samba and SSH connection protocols. Thanks go out to Tate for the help in configuring the OS to my custom specs.
